- 4 The Locusts
- 5 The Frogs
For the saints “the Day of the Lord” is a day of blessing, but for the Nations it is a day of woe.
John described the three last trumpets as three woes to come on mankind, saying “woe, woe, woe, to those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound” (Revelation 8:13).
The expression, “those who dwell on the earth,” is also used in Revelation 13:14, and 17:8, to describe those who would not be not saved. But, “those who dwell in heaven,” in Revelation 13:6, are those who will be saved. They will not be affected by the last three trumpets, just as they were not affected by the first four trumpets, which removed the lawless from the kingdom of heaven. All the plagues of the seven trumpets, like the Ten plagues on Egypt, will not harm the children of God.
The first woe was the release of Satan, and his final deception of the world. The second woe, is the sixth trumpet, the Great Battle that ends mankind’s existence, but Christ will come for saints. The third woe is the last trumpet that calls up the saints, and calls the world to receive God’s judgment.
After 1,000 Years (Revelation 20)
We know from Revelation 20:7-8, that after Satan has been bound for 1,000 years, he will be released from the Abyss, to deceive the nations one last time, to gather them together at Armageddon.
In Chapter 20, verse 1, an Angel with the key of the abyss, locked Satan up for 1,000 years, and in Chapter 9, verse 1, we find the Angel having the key of the abyss, to release Satan.
The release of Satan of the first of the three woes described by John.
The World before Satan is released
Of course, it is difficult for us to understand exactly how this deception of Satan will be manifest. If we did know more exactly, then it might not be effective.
But, perhaps it is easier to understand the state of the world before Satan is released.
By this time, the Sanctified Church has been fully established. All of the deceptions of Latin theology have been removed. The kingdom of heaven has been cleansed as Daniel explained. In this time, all believers are sanctified, in the truth. Jesus’ prayer has been fulfilled, and the whole world knows that Jesus has been sent by God. Just as Jesus prayed, “may they all be one . . . that the world may know that You sent Me” (John 17:22-23).
But perhaps, things are too good. Man’s nature is to rebel and to sin. The natural man rejects the things of God, and Satan will easily fool mankind once again.
We can understand why God has allowed this attack of Satan. By this time the world knows that there is only one Church and this Church has the truth and the power of God. All those who believe in Jesus are “one” just as Jesus prayed for. All of the prophecies of the Bible have been shown to have been fulfilled. The people of the world are now without excuse.
Therefore, those who refuse to enter the Church to receive God’s grace will receive punishment. They will be allowed to be deceived by Satan once again, and they will receive the torment of Satan, which God will allow. The Sanctified Church is the Church of the living God, the dwelling place of God. By rejecting the power of salvation in the Church, the people of the world are actually rejecting God Himself, and their torment is well deserved.
John describes two plagues of Satan. The locusts that cover the whole world, and the frogs. The locusts are released first.
Smoke went out of the pit
In John’s vision, when the bottomless pit was opened, “smoke went out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit” (Revelation 9:2).
The great furnace of course, describes the furnace of fire (Matthew 13:42,50) prepared for the unrighteous.
We often use the English expression “smoke screen” to describe “something designed to obscure, confuse or mislead.” The meaning of this, must come from this Bible verse.
The sun and the air are darkened by the smoke. The sun refers to God in the Book of Revelation, as in Revelation 12:1, and 21:23, and the air refers to the spiritual world. In Ephesians 2:2, Satan is called “the Prince of the power of the air.”
The “smoke screen” of Satan will take men’s eyes away from God, and blind them from the truth of the spiritual world. When they can no longer see God, they will easily be misled.
The smokescreen that always keeps men from seeing God and the spiritual world, is the world itself.
The Apostle John described the three unclean spirits of the world as, “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.” This is the smokescreen of the world that prevents us from receiving the love of the Father, and entering God’s Church. “Do not love this world, or the things of this world, for if anyone loves the things of this world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:16).
Locusts harm the unrepentant
Out of the smoke, comes locusts, just as the plague that Moses brought on Egypt. Like the plagues on Egypt, and the first four trumpets, this plague does not hurt the people of God. It only strikes those who are not in the Sanctified Church, those who do not have the seal of the living God on their foreheads.
Verse 4 says, “they were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.” All those who have not been sanctified, by the Holy Spirit, all those outside of the Sanctified Church.
In verse 11, we learn that the locusts have Satan as their king, “the angel of the abyss.” Satan was thrown into the abyss, for one thousand years, and has now been released. His name is given as Abaddon, Apollyon – in Greek, Apolluón, meaning “destroyer.” For Satan comes to “kill and destroy.” That is the Greek word, apollumi. But Christ came to bring “life and life abundantly,” (John 10:10).
They torment Men for 5 months (150 years)
They are not permitted to kill anyone but only to torment with their sting for 5 months. This can only be 150 years, 5 months of 30 days each, just as 3 ½ months, or 1260 days, in Revelation, the time, times and half a time from Daniel, the prophecy of the 69 weeks until the Messiah’s coming and the prophecy of the 2,300 days, that gives us the 1,000 year rule of Christ with the saints (2,300 days, in Daniel 8, less 1,290 days in Daniel 12).
We can also see the first four trumpets over a period of 600 years, from 1917 AD until 2471 AD, or 2493 AD, if we strictly count 2,300 days from the sin that caused desolation in 193 AD. This gives us about 150 years, for the first four trumpets, and now we are specifically told that the fifth trumpet is over a period of 5 months, being 150 years.
Bowl of Wrath
Hail and fire mixed with blood
Sores on those who worship the image of the beast and receive his mark
(the Trinity and changing the Sabbath)
A great mountain burning with fire enters the sea (the Sanctified Church appears throughout the word)
The sea became as blood
(spiritual death for baptizing in the kingdom of the beast)
The Spirit of Wormwood enters the rivers and springs
The rivers and springs become blood; those in the kingdom of the beast drink an evil spirit
A third of the sun, and moon, and stars darkened
4. The sun scorched men with fire, the Spirit of God brings judgment/ 5. The throne of the beast is darkened
Satan is released
6. The River Euphrates is dried up
We are told that the scorpions have a sting but will not kill, rather they will just torment mankind, and men will long for death. Of course, it is this longing for death that will give the men of the world the desire to gather together at the place called Armageddon.
The Appearance of the Locusts
These locusts were first described by the prophet Joel.
He introduced them in Chapter 1.
“their appearance is like the appearance of horses, and like the swift steeds they so run, with a noise of chariots …before them the people writhe in pain, all their faces are drained in colour.” (Joel 2:4-6).
It is not immediately apparent that Joel is describing an army of locusts, until we come to verse,25, where God says, “I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten … my great army which I sent amongst you.”
The appearance of the locust was like horses prepared for battle.
The Pulpit commentary says
“They are said to resemble horses in the shape of the head; hence the Germans call them Heupferde, or hay-horses, and the Italians cavalette. This resemblance had been noticed long ago by Theodoret, who says, ‘If any one should examine accurately the head of the locust, he will find it exceedingly like that of a horse.’ – Pulpit commentary, Joel 2:4
But John told us a few things about these locusts that Joel did not mention,
On their heads appeared to be crowns of gold.
Their faces were like the faces of men.
They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions.
They had breastplates like the breastplates of iron.
The sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, many horses rushing for battle.
Understanding Satan’s Deception
The Apostle Paul said, “the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons . . . forbidding marriage and advocating abstaining from certain foods” (1 Timothy 4:1). In Colossians, he warned us that “self abasement and severe treatment of the body, has no value against fleshly indulgence” (Colossians 2:23).
This is the greatest deception of Mystery Babylon. It takes us from the worship of God in the Holy Spirit, and deceives us “with the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion” (Colossians 2:23).
Self-made religion has no power against the lust of the eyes, and the lust of the flesh, because it is rooted in pride, ‘the pride of life.” It is self-made.
By crowns of gold, we can understand that these demons must work through the “respected in society,” and deceive men according to status.
These demons have the “faces of men” – meaning they work through people. The power of Satan was given “the eyes of a man” in the Bishop of Rome (Daniel 7:8). They have “hair like women, and teeth like lions” – for human beauty has teeth to devour those who do not love the truth. Joel also describes Mystery Babylon with the teeth of a lion (Joel 1:6).
The Sting of the Locusts
In verse 3, we are told that “power” was given to the locusts, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
The scorpion that John may have in mind is the Israeli Yellow Scorpion, properly called the Deathstalker. It is common in the Negev Desert of southern Israel. It has a very painful sting that does not normally result in death, but its victims may wish for death. They will likely never forget the excruciating pain it delivers.
The plague that is on all men who are not saved is sin, and the “sting of sin is death” (1 Corinthians 15:56). So John says that they long for death, rather than life, eternal life. Sin is the “sting” of these locusts, who have the power to sting as scorpions. Those who have been stung have been deceived by the king of the locusts, the “destroyer,” Abaddon, the thief who came to “kill, steal and destroy” (John 10:10).
Revelation 9:6 says literally that men will desire death and it shall flee from them. Why is the sting of sin so great among men who have come to know the truth? Because their condemnation is much greater. Hebrews 10:26 tells us that “if we go on sinning willfully after having received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for our sins.”
The release of Satan is described in the sixth bowl of wrath, as the work of three unclean spirits, “coming out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs, for they are spirits of demons performing signs which go out to the kings of the whole world” (Revelation 16:13-14). These demons will gain the political power of this world, with their false miracles, and the lies. There seems to be a suggestion that “Mystery Babylon” is revived by these unclean spirits. In the last trumpet, “Babylon is split into three parts” (Revelation 16:19). In the Book of Ezekiel, we learn that Gog, the God, will be the King of the North, and the Northern Countries that previously embraced Latin theology.
The second plague on Egypt was frogs, “which shall go up and come into your house, into your bedroom, on your bed, into the houses of your servants, on your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading bowls. And the frogs shall come up on you, on your people, and on all your servants.” (Exodus 8:3-4)
The Prophet Joel described the locusts, like the frogs, saying, “they run to and fro in the city, they run on the wall, they climb into the houses, they enter at the windows like a thief” (Joel 2:9).
Why are these three unclean spirits called “frogs”?
Gil’s exposition says, “these unclean spirits as frogs went into the King’s bedchamber, so these get into the private retirements of princes, into their cabinet councils, and stir them up to war and bloodshed.”
The inner chambers of these kings will not a place of prayer in the Holy Spirit, but a place of lust, and worldly pursuits. Their eyes will be blinded by the smokescreen of Satan, and they will be given over to demons.
