Appendix 5 – The Spirit and the Holy Spirit, which One is it?

After the Day of Pentecost, the Spirit of Christ was called “the Spirit” and the Spirit of God was called “the Holy Spirit.”

The Spirit of Christ was set apart in the beginning of creation, and was called “the Holy One of Israel.” This is why the Spirit of Christ was called “the Holy Spirit” in the Old Testament.

The Spirit of God is the Spirit that sanctifies the body of Christ. For this reason, the Spirit of God is also called “the Holy Spirit.”

It is actually not very difficult to know which One is being spoken of, throughout the Bible, as we demonstrate below.

References to the Spirit of Christ after the Day of Pentecost

Below, we attempt to present all the references to the Spirit of Christ, after the Day of Pentecost, more than 80 in all; as well as all the references to the Holy Spirit in the Bible.

In most cases, these are easily identified, for examples, “the Spirit of Christ” (Rom 8:9); “the Spirit of adoption,” “the Spirit of His Son” (Rom 8:16, Gal 4:6); “the Spirit intercedes for us” (Rom 8:26, 27, Eph 2:18); “a life giving Spirit” (1 Cor 15:45, 2 Cor 3:6), “the Lord is the Spirit,” (2 Cor 3:17, 18);  “the fruit of the Spirit” (Gal 5:22 cf John 15:5); “a dwelling place of God in the Spirit” (Eph 2:22 cf John 14:2), “hear what the Spirit says to the Churches” (Rev 2:7 etc).

On a few occasions, we can only presume the meaning from comparison to similar verses.

The Three Less Obvious Verses

There are three instances where it is not so obvious which Spirit is spoken of, these are Matthew 28:19, Luke 11:13, and John 20:22. However, each of these verses contain a profound truth.

Matthew 28:19 – Jesus asked His disciples to baptize “in the NAME of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” His meaning is from Isaiah 9:6, “for unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and His NAME shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” The Holy Spirit that Jesus spoke was the Spirit of Christ who was called “Wonderful” (Judges 13:18); the Spirit of Christ is our Counselor; our Advocate, see 1 John 2:1, and Romans 8:26. The Spirit of Christ is the “person,” who was manifest in the flesh as “the Son.”  The Spirit of God is not a person, but an anointing. Since Jesus gave this instruction to His disciples before the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit in this verse most logically refers to the Spirit of Christ.

Luke 11:13 – here Jesus speaks before Day of Pentecost, and promises that the Holy Spirit will be received by ALL who ask the Father. This can only be the Spirit of Christ that is received by faith (Galatians 3:2). It cannot be the Spirit of God that was poured out on the Day of Pentecost, and was received by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:17-19; 19:6). After the Church was desolated in 193 A.D., the Spirit of truth was no longer given to anyone.

John 20:22-23 – here Jesus breathed His own Spirit into His disciples, saying “receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven.” The Spirit of Christ, is the Angel of God, to whom all judgement has been given (Exodus 23:21, Mark 2:10, John 5:22, etc).
