Daniel 1

Introduction

Dan 1:1
Nebuchadnezzar…besieged it – he was actually Nebuchadnezzar II, who reigned from 605 BC – 562 BC.

Dan 1:2
the Lord gave Jehoiahim king of Judah into his hand – this verse foreshadows Dan 7:25: “the saints shall be given into his hand.” God allowed Israel to be taken into captivity for 70 years as prophesied by Jeremiah. In Dan 9:5, Daniel confessed that Israel was captured because it departed from God’s precepts and judgments.

Dan 1:3-4
young men in whom there was no blemish – Daniel was selected from the most outstanding of Israel.

Dan 1:5
three years of training – it appears the three year training was cut short after Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in the second year of his reign, see Dan 2:1. Daniel was then promoted to Prime Minister, Dan 2:48.

Dan 1:6-7
Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Abed-Nego – through this story, there are different Chaldean names given.

Dan 1:8-9
he would not defile himself – Daniel’s ability to hear from God came by his separation from the world. It appears he must have also become a eunuch.

Dan 1:10 -16
their features appeared better – the blessing of holiness

Dan 1:17
Daniel had understanding in visions and dreams – which will be proven shortly

Dan 1:18-20
ten times better than the magicians – God gave them ability as mentioned in verse 17

Dan 1:19
until the first year of King Cyrus – the Book of Daniel ends in Chapter 12 in the third year of Cyrus. Therefore, Daniel must have left his position after King Cyrus assumed more control. In Daniel 6:28, we are told that Daniel prospered in the reign of Cyrus.
